Matthew Caldwell Named CEO of Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx as New Ownership Takes Charge
Matthew Caldwell, former President and CEO of the Florida Panthers, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx, effective September 2, 2025. In his new role, Caldwell will oversee the day-to-day business operations and strategic initiatives for the NBA's Timberwolves, the WNBA's Lynx, and the G League's Iowa Wolves.
Caldwell's appointment follows the recent acquisition of controlling interest in the Timberwolves and Lynx by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez. The NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the $1.5 billion sale from longtime owner Glen Taylor to the Lore-Rodriguez group on June 24, 2025. This transaction marked the end of Taylor’s 31-year tenure as owner, which began in 1994 when he purchased the Timberwolves for $88 million.
During his nine-year tenure with the Florida Panthers, Caldwell led the organization to consecutive Stanley Cup championships and was instrumental in achieving record-setting ticket sales, television viewership, and sponsorship revenue. His leadership contributed to the Panthers being named the 2025 Sports Business Journal Team of the Year.
Caldwell's background includes service as a U.S. Army veteran, graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and roles as a former Vice President at Goldman Sachs.
Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez expressed their confidence in Caldwell's leadership, stating, "Our vision is for the Timberwolves and Lynx to set a new standard of excellence in pro sports, and we're confident that Matthew is the leader needed to make that a reality."
Caldwell shared his enthusiasm for the new role, saying, "I love the NHL. I've enjoyed hockey and I'm a big fan of it. But the NBA is just a much bigger, global platform. I really believe in Marc and Alex and their vision and what they're trying to do."
Caldwell's appointment signifies a strategic move by the new ownership to infuse experienced leadership into the organization. His proven track record in revitalizing the Panthers' business operations, including securing long-term agreements and expanding local fan engagement, positions him well to elevate the Timberwolves and Lynx.
The transition also reflects the broader trend of cross-sport executive movements, highlighting the transferable nature of leadership skills across major sports leagues.
As Caldwell assumes his new role, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx are poised to embark on a new era, aligning with the owners' vision of establishing the franchises as universally admired professional sports organizations.
