India Bids to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

India has officially submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, marking a significant step in the nation's ambition to elevate its global sporting profile. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) delegation presented the proposal at the Commonwealth Sport headquarters in London, emphasizing a commitment to delivering athlete-centered, inclusive, sustainable, and future-oriented Games.

The federal cabinet has approved the Host Collaboration Agreement and provided the necessary ministerial guarantees to support the bid. This approval underscores the government's commitment to enhancing India's global standing in sports and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of bringing the Olympic Games to India.

Ahmedabad has been identified as an ideal host city due to its world-class sporting infrastructure, modern training facilities, and vibrant sports culture. A key highlight is the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world's largest cricket stadium, which successfully hosted the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final. The city is also developing the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will feature an aquatics center, a football stadium, and multiple indoor arenas, further enhancing its capability to host large-scale international sporting events.

India faces competition from Canada and Nigeria for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The host city is expected to be announced at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in November 2025. Notably, recent editions of the Games have faced challenges in securing hosts, with previous editions being relocated due to financial constraints.

Hosting the Commonwealth Games is anticipated to bring significant economic and social benefits to India. The event is expected to create jobs, stimulate tourism, and open up opportunities in sectors such as sports science, event management, logistics, transport, broadcasting, IT, and communications. Additionally, it is projected to inspire millions of young Indians to pursue sports professionally while strengthening national pride and unity.

India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi, an event that was marred by corruption and mismanagement. The 2030 bid is seen as an opportunity to improve its international reputation and demonstrate its capability to host large-scale international sporting events successfully. This initiative also serves as a stepping stone towards India's aspiration to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad being a leading candidate for that event as well.
